The Upton Fire and EMS Association will be holding a Road to Recovery Porketta on April 25th, 2015 at 5:00pm and hosted at the Nipmuc Rod and Gun Club in Upton, MA. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Marchand Family Fund and assist Lt. Shaun Marchand while he recovers from a lengthy illness. Upton fire was joined by members from Hopkinton, Grafton, Hopedale and West Barnstable Fire Departments for live fire trainings at 18 Elm St in Upton.
The property at 18 Elm Street has significance to the Town due to the historic chamber that is located there. The Historical Commission asked the Fire Department if they could use the house for training. The Upton Fire Department had not conducted live fire training in an acquired structure for more than ten years. In order to conduct live fire training in the house the Fire Department was required to obtain a special permit from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Once the permit was obtained several members of the Department developed a training plan using the Live Fire Training Standard 1403 recommended by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
The training focused on several key objectives such as fire attack, ventilation, maintaining crew integrity, coordination of company operations, accountability and incident management. Over a period of four days the Upton Fire Department conducted 18 live fire training evolutions with the help of firefighters and fire officers from the Towns of Grafton, Hopedale, Hopkinton, and West Barnstable In addition the Departments were assisted by the Upton Police Department and Water Department. More than 50 firefighters benefited from this training over four days. We also recognize that the citizens in the community were faced with rusty water and smoke in the air during the training.
